St. John’s College of Nursing opened its new Simulation Center in June 2016. The center gives nursing students a realistic hands-on experience to better prepare them for the routine and unexpected events they will encounter in the actual clinical environment as nurses.
It has six clinical settings: an operating room, an emergency room, medical/surgical patient room, a pediatric room, an exam room, a skills lab and classrooms. It is used in every course the college offers to allow students to learn, practice and enhance their skills in a safe, risk-free environment.
Each interaction with the patient manikins can be recorded so the student and faculty can review the practice scenario to learn what went well and what should be done differently in the future. The center helps ensure specific learning targets can always be met.
